VanMoof S6 and 32 km/h since firmware 1.12.1: what we know

MoofMateLast updated

Since firmware 1.12.1 the VanMoof S6 and S6 Open appear to support a 32 km/h speed limit, set through VanMoof partners. VanMoof has not officially confirmed this yet, and the setting cannot be changed through third-party apps like MoofMate.

What changed in firmware 1.12.1

Until recently, the VanMoof S6 and S6 Open were limited to 25 km/h. Since firmware 1.12.1, the S6 appears to also support a 32 km/h speed limit, which would put it in the same range as the S5 and A5.

There are two important caveats. First, the 32 km/h limit is not something you can switch on yourself: as far as we know, it can only be set by an official VanMoof partner. Second, VanMoof has not officially confirmed this yet, so details may still change.

Why MoofMate cannot set 32 km/h on the S6

On the S6, the 32 km/h option is not exposed to third-party apps. That means MoofMate, and any other third-party VanMoof app, cannot change the S6 speed limit to 32 km/h, even on firmware 1.12.1 or newer. In MoofMate, the S6 and S6 Open will keep showing 25 km/h as the only speed limit you can set yourself.

You can still use MoofMate on the S6 and S6 Open for the features that are supported, such as default settings, ride tracking, and diagnostics. If a partner has set your bike to 32 km/h, that limit stays on the bike when you use MoofMate alongside it.

How to get 32 km/h on your S6

First, make sure your S6 is running firmware 1.12.1 or newer. Firmware updates are installed through the official VanMoof app; MoofMate does not install firmware.

Then contact an official VanMoof partner and ask whether they can set your S6 to 32 km/h. This is done with partner tools, so you need to visit them or arrange it with them directly. Because VanMoof has not confirmed it yet, not every partner may offer this. Ask the partner beforehand about any costs and conditions.

Ride responsibly and know your local rules

In most EU countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, pedal assist above 25 km/h means the bike no longer counts as a regular e-bike on public roads. Check what a 32 km/h limit means for your vehicle category, insurance, and warranty in your country before you ride with it.
